Photo Scavenger Hunt List

Gather the entire family for this fun and educational activity! Submit photos of all eight electricity-related items on the scavenger hunt list below and be entered to win a grand prize. Each family who submits all photos and meets the contest criteria will receive an RMLD goody bag.

Submissions were due by October 11, 2021.

1 - Distribution Lines

These are the lines (wires) on top of utility poles that you see running alongside many of the streets in your town. These wires deliver electricity to homes and businesses. You are likely to find these in your neighborhood and even on your own street! Look for the distribution lines in your town!

Note: Most RMLD customers are served by overhead distribution lines, but there are a few areas that have underground wires. Some condo/apartment complexes are served by underground wires. If you see a pipe or cable rising from the ground to your electric meter, your home is served by underground wires.

2 - Solar Panels

Solar panels use energy from the sun to generate electricity. Solar energy is renewable and non-carbon. Some businesses and homeowners have installed solar on their property to generate their own renewable electricity. There are also large utility-scale solar farms which you have probably seen around Massachusetts. Solar power can only be generated during daylight hours. Look around your neighborhood and town for solar panels on a building roof or in a field.

Note: RMLD offers solar rebates - visit our Solar Guide to learn more.

3 - Plug-in Electric Vehicle

There are close to 50 different plug-in EV models available today. Some are 100% electric while others are hybrid electric/gas. Plug-in EVs have reduced or zero tailpipe carbon emissions. Increasing the number of plug-in EVs on the road will help Massachusetts meet its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Visit Plug Star by Plug In America to see currently available models. Look around town for an EV; some of your neighbors may even have one! Hint: many EVs in Massachusetts have a special EV license plate.

4 - Public EV Charging Station

EVs can be charged at home using a standard electrical outlet. Some EV owners install a level 2 EV charger at home which will recharge the vehicle even faster. There is also a network of public charging stations available for EV drivers who need to charge up while out and about. These public charging stations can be found where people park their cars such as at shopping centers and parking garages. Visit Plug Share to find a public charging station nearby!

5 - Electric Meter

An electric meter measures the amount of electricity that a home or business uses for billing purposes, and is normally found on the outside of a building. Most electric meters automatically send meter readings to the electric utility. Look around the outside of your home and see if you can find the electric meter.

6 - Power Strip

A power strip can be used to safely plug more than one item into a single electrical outlet. Power strips are commonly used for computer equipment or in an entertainment center. Some power strips have controls that can help you save energy and money by reducing the amount of standby power your electronics consume - these are called "advanced" power strips. There are probably several power strips in use around your home!

Note: RMLD offers instant savings on advanced power strips through the residential online store - click here to shop.

7 - ENERGY STAR® Label

ENERGY STAR® is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency. Products that earn the ENERGY STAR® label are certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to operate at a certain level of efficiency to help consumers save energy and money. ENERGY STAR® certifies all sorts of electrical products including air conditioners, air source heat pumps, refrigerators, light bulbs, and more. Take a look at the electronics and appliances in your home and see if you can find an ENERGY STAR® label.
