Commercial Peak Demand Response

Empowering Customers to Save Energy and Earn Credits

Eligible Customer Classes: Non-Residential

RMLD's Commercial Peak Demand Response (PDR) program encourages customers to reduce energy usage during peak demand periods in exchange for bill credits. By lowering energy consumption during peak events, customers can play an essential role in reducing strain on the energy system while earning financial rewards.

How the Program Works

RMLD and our partner, Tangent Energy, will notify participants of potential peak demand events in advance. During these events, participants are asked to reduce their energy usage. The more you reduce, the more you save.

Program Benefits

  • Earn Credits: Receive credits based on how much energy usage you reduce during peak times.
  • Lower Energy Costs: By participating, you can directly save on your energy bills.
  • Help the Grid: Your participation helps stabilize the grid during critical demand times, supporting a more reliable energy system for all.
  • Keep Rates Low: By helping to reduce RMLD's demand during peak times, you help lower electricity rates for all RMLD customers.

Annual Performance Credits

Each year, your business will receive credits based on how much energy usage you reduce during the identified peak demand events. These credits will appear on your electric bill.

How Commercial PDR Credits Are Calculated

RMLD, in partnership with Tangent Energy, calculates Commercial PDR credits each year. Here's how it works:

  • Baseline Demand Calculation
Tangent calculates each participant's Baseline Demand based on a 10-day rolling average of their energy usage, measured every five minutes. This baseline is weather adjusted to account for external factors that may influence energy consumption.
  • Peak Usage
Each participant's Peak Usage is compared to Baseline Demand. The difference between the two represents the reduction.
  • Reduction Criteria
Customers will be credited for their participation if they meet either of the following reduction criteria:
    • Reduction of 100 kilowatts during a peak hour.
    • Reduction of at least 3% of the customer's baseline demand during a peak hour.
  • Peak Events
Credits are awarded based on energy usage reduced during 12 Monthly Transmission Peaks and one Annual Capacity Peak. Under the shared savings structure, customers are credited with half of the transmission and capacity costs that RMLD would have had to pay had there been no reduction.
