Public Power Open House
Public power is about more than electricity—it’s about community. Every October, we take time to celebrate the people and partnerships that make reliable, locally owned power possible.
Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) joins more than 2,000 public power utilities across the country to celebrate Public Power Week each October. This national event recognizes the benefits of community-owned electric utilities.
RMLD's annual open house is our way of saying thank you to the customers and partners who make public power possible. The event offers run, education, and hands-on learning for all ages.

Why Public Power Matters
Public power utilities like RMLD are community-owned, not-for-profit, and committed to delivering reliable, low-cost, non-carbon electricity. Revenues are reinvested locally to maintain infrastructure, support renewable energy programs, and provide excellent customer service.
Here's how RMLD puts the values of public power into action:
- Affordable, reliable service: RMLD consistently provides some of the lowest electric rates in the region while maintaining exceptional reliability through continuous investment in our grid and infrastructure.
- Local governance and accountability: RMLD is overseen by a Board of Commissioners and advised by a Citizens' Advisory Board (CAB), ensuring that decisions are made in the best interested of the communities we serve. Learn more.
- Investments in non-carbon energy: Through initiatives such as the Renewable Choice program, RMLD offers customers the option to support renewable energy resources that go beyond state requirements. Additionally, RMLD continues to expand its non-carbon energy portfolio and invest in technologies that support a more sustainable electric system for future generations.
- Support for education and community engagement: RMLD partners with local schools, libraries, and civic organizations to share information about electrical safety, energy efficiency programs, and sustainability.
