Renewable Choice
Are you looking to reduce your carbon footprint?
Reading Municipal Light Department's (RMLD) voluntary Renewable Choice program is a great option for customers who wish to support additional non-carbon energy resources above and beyond RMLD's annual non-carbon energy obligations.
Funds from the Renewable Choice Program will be used to retire additional NEPOOL GIS-compliant renewable certificates, specifically Mass Class 1 certificates. (Currently these retired certificates are solar RECs.)
Options & Cost
Customers can choose to participate at one of two levels to bring their monthly electricity usage to 75 percent or 100 percent renewable/non-carbon.
The monthly Renewable Choice charge is based on the participating customer's monthly kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage.
Average Residential Customer Example
The table shows an estimate of what an average-sized residential customer (approximately 800 kWh/month) would pay monthly, based on the selected level.
| Selected Level | Rate | Estimated Monthly Renewable Choice Charge |
|---|---|---|
| 75% | $0.008 per kWh | Approximately $7 |
| 100% | $0.018 per kWh | Approximately $15 |
This table is for illustrative purposes only. The Renewable Choice charge is based on actual monthly kWh usage.
Average Commercial Customer Example
The table shows an estimate of what an average-sized commercial customer (assuming 4,909 kWh/month) would pay monthly, based on the selected level.
| Selected Level | Rate | Estimated Monthly Renewable Choice Charge |
|---|---|---|
| 75% | $0.008 per kWh | Approximately $40 |
| 100% | $0.018 per kWh | Approximately $88 |
This table is for illustrative purposes only. The Renewable Choice charge is based on actual monthly kWh usage.
Eligibility
This program is available to all RMLD customers. A one-year commitment is required, and customers must be current with their bill, in good standing, to sign up.
To Sign Up
Complete the Renewable Choice sign-up form or contact customer service during regular business hours (Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) at 781-942-6598.
About Renewable Certificates
For each megawatt-hour of electricity produced by a qualified renewable resource, one renewable certificate is created on the New England Power Pool Generation Information System (NEPOOL GIS). The certificate market helps ensure that renewable resources remain competitive in New England by capturing their environmental value or "attributes" as their own unique product. In doing so it helps encourage the construction of new renewable resources such as solar and wind. As a Renewable Choice participant, you are contributing to a more sustainable power supply for RMLD and the greater New England power grid.
Did you know? In addition to Renewable Choice, customers can participate in Solar Choice to support local solar energy projects without installing panels.
