Tree Trimming
Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) recognizes and appreciates that trees are valuable assets to the landscapes in our community. As trees continue to be one of the primary causes of service interruption, RMLD follows a vegetation management plan that involves removing or controlling target trees and brush that are too tall or could grow to interfere with power lines. RMLD's objectives are to maintain a safe, reliable electrical system, and take a proactive approach towards careful vegetation management.
RMLD Tree Trimming Focuses on:
Clearance: The program aims for specific clearances that vary based on factors like line voltage and substation proximity.
Safety: The work is performed by trained crews to minimize risks. It is dangerous for homeowners to attempt to trim trees near power lines. RMLD partners with Northern Tree Service to perform necessary tree trimming.
Public vs. Private Property: RMLD handles trimming for its power lines. Each town is responsible for its respective public shade trees, parks, and schools, while landowners are responsible for trees on their private property. Contact RMLD with concerns about private trees that are too close to power lines. .
What to do if you see a problem
- If you notice a tree growing into or touching power lines, do not touch it. Report the problem to RMLD by calling 781-942-6598.
- If you have a concern or question about a town-owned tree, contact your town hall.
- If you have a tree on your property that is becoming a hazard to power lines, contact RMLD to determine if it is safe to trim yourself or if it needs to be managed by a professional.
Remember, it is crucial to stay clear of power lines and never attempt to trim trees near them yourself.
