About RMLD

Founded in 1894, RMLD is the largest of Massachusetts’ 40 municipal light departments by electric load and serves more than 70,000 customers and manages more than 31,000 meter connections.

As a locally owned, not-for-profit utility, RMLD is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners elected by Reading voters. A Citizens’ Advisory Board, representing the four communities, offers additional guidance. The RMLD team of more than 90 employees brings broad industry experience and keeps pace with the fast-changing energy landscape.

About one-third of RMLD electricity sales come from residential customers, while commercial, industrial and municipal accounts make up the remaining two-thirds. RMLD offers a diverse suite of programs and incentives to support this wide range of customers' needs, including rebates, workshops, and energy-saving programs.

RMLD has a long history of dedicated service and community engagement. From engaging younger customers through annual art contests and local events, to forging relationships with first responders and legislative partners, to connecting with industry peers and serving communities in need, RMLD remains committed to both its local and broader mission of service.

Mission

RMLD works to serve customers with reliable, low-cost, and increasingly non-carbon energy.
