Empowering our Community Through Education

Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) is committed to inspiring lifelong learning about energy, safety, and sustainability. Through partnerships with local schools, youth groups, and community organizations, we help residents of all ages understand where electricity comes from and how to use it responsibly.

From colorful classroom projects to hands-on educational evenings, RMLD programs spark curiosity and connection across our service territories.

Art Contests

For more than 25 years, RMLD's Elementary Art Contest has been a meaningful part of the curriculum in our local schools. It provides fourth graders with a hands-on experience to explore topics like electrical safety, how power reaches homes, and the role electricity plays in everyday life.

To expand on that foundation, RMLD introduced a High School Art Contest in 2017. This contest invites older students to take a more in-depth look at energy concepts while showcasing their artistic talents across a variety of mediums.

RMLD Historical Calendar

Each year, RMLD creates a limited-edition wall calendar featuring historical photographs from the four communities we serve. What began as a small outreach effort has grown into one of our most popular annual traditions with many residents look forward to it all year. The calendar is produced in partnership with local historical organizations and community contributors, showcasing treasured images that celebrate our region’s past. It’s our way of giving back to the community and highlighting the shared history that connects Reading, North Reading, Wilmington, and Lynnfield Center. The RMLD Historical Calendar is released in early December and is available for free at the RMLD front entrance while supplies last. Copies typically go quickly, and many families consider it a meaningful keepsake or a thoughtful holiday gift.

Youth & Community Education Program

RMLD partners with local youth and community organizations to promote energy awareness, safety, and sustainability. Our engaging, hands-on presentations bring electricity concepts to life for participants of all ages.

We've proudly collaborated with groups such as the Cub Scouts to educate members on electrical safety, bucket truck and lineworker career exploration, power generation, and metering education that explains how electricity is measured and delivered safely to homes and businesses.

Senior Center Visits

Our team offers visits to local senior centers to share updates on energy efficiency programs, rebates, and energy saving tips. These visits also provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions and learn more about RMLD's reliable, low-cost, and increasingly non-carbon power supply.
