Accountant

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Business Finance and Information Technology, the Staff Accountant provides administrative and accounting support to the accounting function.  Broad areas of support include, but are not limited to Accounts Payable, Cash, Payroll, General Ledger and Sick Time.  Also, acts as backup to the Senior Accountant.

Illustrative Work Activities:

Essential work activities, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

·         Responsible for all aspects of the Accounts Payable Function. Able to create new vendors for final bill customers.  Distributes accounting department’s mail daily.

·         Responsible for costing of all billable jobs such as forced accounts, pole damages, advance in aid of construction and to update and maintain status log of said jobs.

·         Responsible for the daily reconciling of cash receipts, updating cash receipts journal, reconciling petty cash, reconciling customer deposits, reconciling bounced checks journal.

·         Updates and maintains the following:  fixed assets report, kilowatt hours sold spreadsheet, revenue analysis spreadsheet, data entry of vehicle costs.  Enters month end journal entries and monthly passbook interest income entries.  Prepares health insurance quarterly report and reconcile general ledger expense accounts.

·         Responsible for maintaining all aspects of employee’s sick time balance found on Excel spreadsheets. Reconciles spreadsheet total to paycheck stubs and prepares sick statements for annual distribution to employees.  Creates the sick time used and perfect attendance analyses as well as the year-end audit schedule (A/C 232-2) for the General Manager.

·         Responsible for assisting with Payroll and backing up the Senior Accountant in his/her absence.  Updates and maintains attendance records in Replicon. 

·         Ability to interact with all functional areas of the RMLD and all levels of union and non-union personnel.

·         Adheres to RMLD policies, practices and procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Basic Requirements:

A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university.   Having co-op or internship assignments in accounting is preferred.

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of general accounting experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping concepts and practices. Knowledge of financial reporting concepts and preferred business practices. Knowledge of financial statement preparation consistent with general accepted accounting principles.  Skilled in utilizing and interpreting financial data. Must have well-developed computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office software package including SharePoint.

Judgment and Initiative:

Under the direction of the Director, perform duties in accordance with established policies, codes, laws and professional standards.  Good understanding of utility’s best practices. Ability to complete assigned work in a timely manner.  Ability to establish own work plans and priorities and effectively manage time.

Manual Skills:

Ability to use a computer, standard office and communication equipment.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform job functions under occasionally adverse weather and working conditions for extended periods of time.  Moderate physical effort may be required on an intermittent basis.

MA-Valid Driver’s license required.
