Reading hero firefighter and Wilmington resident Bob Beck wins North Reading Rotary’s grand prize

Reading, MA, May 19, 2008:    Now, here’s a story! On April 30, Reading Firefigher Bob Beck of Wilmington and fellow firefighters Ryan Buckley, Sean Devlin and Scott Dole attended the Reading-North Reading Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizens’ Award Dinner at the Hillview Country Club in North Reading to see their co-worker Brian Ryan receive an award from Chief Greg Burns naming him Reading’s 2008 Firefighter of the Year. They were looking forward to an off-duty evening of relaxation and socialization. A guest at the event choked and lost consciousness and Beck and the other firefighters were quick to get back into their working mode. After some tense moments, they cleared the guest’s airway. He regained consciousness and was able to breathe on his own. North Reading firefighters arrived at the scene to transport the victim to Winchester Hospital. Later in the evening North Reading Rotary Secretary Steve May who was a guest at the Chamber event approached Beck to congratulate him on his rescue and as an afterthought asked Beck if he’d like to buy a raffle ticket to a Rotary event being held at the Hillview just two nights later on May 2. Beck purchased two tickets. On Friday evening when Rotary President-Elect Eric Evans pulled the winning ticket – who should win? You guessed it -- Bob Beck won himself a 42” Sansui Plasma HDTV from Doyon’s TV and Appliance Center in Reading. He said it would make a perfect Mother’s Day gift for his mother. Bet she was pleased! By the way, the choking guest was held overnight at Winchester Hospital, examined and released. He’s doing fine.
